Athlete Profile

Mary Hudson

CFNWA recently visited with Mary and she had a few things to tell us about CrossFit...

Mary:

Why did I start CF?

My running partner Kelly talked me into checking it out.  I had been teaching group fitness since 2001 and always thought I was in pretty good physical condition – I mean, I could run a 3:30 marathon and out bench any woman at the conventional gyms I taught at, why did I need CF?  But when I walked in those CF doors, I realized I was not half the athlete I thought I was.  I went from being top dog at the typical gym to the bottom of the barrel and I saw a passion and drive at CFNWA that I had never experienced before.  Ask Lee.  I walked in with a chip on my shoulder which was soon crushed by all the athletes at CFNWA.  I wanted what they had – the athleticism, the confidence, the camaraderie, and yes the SOCKS.  I saw that the knowledge and support I needed to be that athlete existed at CFNWA.

Favorite WOD’s: Anything that is a Hero WOD including Chemo for in my mind, that is a hero WOD.  Those WOD’s humble me and remind me how grateful I am to be able to put myself in pain for a short period of time compared to the pain our service men and women and their families have endured for my freedom.  I am grateful to be able to experience that pain.

Favorite Movements: 12oz curls – I think Lee needs to incorporate those in the up-coming WOD’s.  Seriously, all of the Olympic lifts because all these movements are challenging and a great way to gauge my progress.

What do I like about Crossfit?  Everything except the picture of Crabs in the girl’s bathroom.  First off, I LOVE the people.  The knowledge, support and encouragement that is expressed by the trainers and members at CFNWA is immense.  I have been in the fitness industry for over 12 years and also ex-military and I can tell you, I have never experienced the passion that exists in those 4 walls at CFNWA at any gym or in any platoon.  I like that CF holds me accountable for my actions and keeps me honest.

What is it about CFNWA that is special to me? : 150 Wallballs.  Why 150 Wallballs?  It is not the WOD itself, but what it represents to me that is special.   It was one of my first WOD’s I completed.  Rachel counted for me and Lee continually reminded me to “find that depth.”  Lee wrote my time on the board with a ROM.  I was PISSED!  How dare Lee call me out!  It was then that I realized I needed to lose the attitude, be honest with myself, listen, respect and absorb all the knowledge I could from the trainers.  Every time I complete 150 wallballs, I am reminded of where I began and where I have come and how blessed I am to not only be coached physically, but emotionally, mentally and dietary by all the respected CFNWA team – and yes Moss, that includes you!

Tony Abercrombie

CrossFit NWA recently sat down and visited with Tony and what he had to say about CrossFit...

Tony:

I was overweight, taking blood pressure meds, and borderline type 2 diabetic. My brother was doing crossfit at the time and I could see the progress he was making. He talked me into stopping by to visit Lee. I could tell right away Lee has a genuine interest in helping people meet their goals and get healthy. I was in from that point on.

My favorite CF WODs are Murph, Hidalgo, Annie, and Cindy.

My favorite CF movements are full squat cleans and split jerks right now.

I enjoy the variety of the workouts. Always something new to work on. I also like the fact that the coaches are always right there to correct issues with form and offer advice as well as encouragement.

I know It's been said many times before, but the thing about CF that is special to me is the sense of community that we have at CFNWA. Seeing everyone else give their best effort and the rewards they get in return inspires me to try that much harder.
